Firm Leading Bridges Project Recognized With Prestigious Award

Community Transportation Solutions wins International Road Federation honor

Louisville, Ky. - Community Transportation Solutions (CTS), the general engineering contractor overseeing work on the Louisville Southern Indiana Ohio River Bridges Project, has been recognized with a global award for excellence in the road industry.

Firm Leading Bridges Project Recognized With Prestigious Award

CTS received the prestigious Global Road Achievement Award (GRAA) at the International Road Federation’s (IRF) 2009 January awards banquet in Washington, D.C. The IRF awards banquet is an annual event held to recognize companies, projects and individuals who have worked to move the road industry forward. This year's GRAA competition recognized 12 projects from around the world for their excellence in the road industry.

The IRF Awards Programs recognize groundbreaking projects that place the industry at the forefront of social and economic development. In doing so, the IRF seeks to promote the positive impact that the road building industry has on the global quality of life.

CTS representatives were on hand to accept the GRAA award for Program Management. The award is given to projects which exemplify the ideals of program and project management and that demonstrate a high degree of complexity.

CTS was selected by the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet and the Indiana Department of Transportation to manage the Ohio River Bridges Project and coordinate the work executed by six design teams. The design work on the project is divided up into six sections, which include each of the two bridges and each of the bridge approaches on either side of the river. Each section design team focuses on the character and needs of the communities in their section. CTS oversees design work, right-of-way acquisition, utility relocation, public involvement and the Disadvantaged Business Enterprise program.

The Bridges Project, a bi-state project, is managed by officials from the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet (KYTC) and the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT). A Bi-State Management Team of these officials oversees work completed by the general engineering consultant, Community Transportation Solutions (CTS), and the six design teams on the project. Each state has a project manager specifically for this project.

The $4.1 billion Ohio River Bridges Project, the third-largest federally funded transportation project in the country, calls for building two bridges and the highways leading to them, including a reconfiguration of the Kennedy Interchange (a.k.a. Spaghetti Junction). The Bridges Project is currently in the design phase with construction scheduled to be complete by 2024. More information can be found at www.kyinbridges.com
